Made, tried and learned

Two things I actually did last year.

Not prizes. A research project and a piece of Computing work, and what each one taught me.

Water in the UAE

My Higher Project Qualification research.

I started out planning to make an artefact, then changed my mind after reading about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and chose to research water instead.

I read general sources on why water matters across the world, then more specific ones on how the water system in the UAE works, and wrote it up as a dissertation.

Writing it taught me to be succinct. Presenting it taught me that I can talk about a subject I know well with confidence.

A speech and a podcast

Computing, on emerging technologies.

My favourite topics were smart cities and ed tech. In class we gave a speech and recorded a podcast, which I enjoyed because it was interactive.

I also wrote and adapted code until it produced the right output, and got better at spotting errors in code and fixing them.

I found the coding topic hard at first, so I asked for help in class and it became clearer by the end. For the graded assignments I used what I learnt in class, my teacher's feedback and my own knowledge.

Why Lancing feels right

Three things I already do, and where they could go next.

Not a list of everything Lancing offers. Three connections between what I do now and what I would do there.

Connection one

Reading and writing

Lancing teaches A Level English Literature, and the English department runs creative writing classes, poetry and essay competitions, reading groups, and theatre trips to the Globe, Chichester Festival Theatre and the National Theatre. Sixth Formers can also join the Theatre Royal Brighton Young Writers programme.

Connection two

How businesses work

Business at Lancing is a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate, taken alongside A Levels. In the Lower Sixth the Lancing Enterprise programme has students running a business of their own, responsible for its finance, marketing and planning, and the Young Enterprise scheme runs alongside.

Connection three

Boarding life

I have boarded at Millfield and in Switzerland.

Lancing is a full boarding school for 13 to 18 year olds, and around fifty new Sixth Form boarders join each year. Houses are single sex and span all five year groups. The girls' boarding houses are Field's, Handford and Manor.
